Facing a numerically superior and ruthless enemy, Ukraine has leaned heavily on innovation to gain an edge. “Innovation is our lifeline,” said Oleksandr Yabchanka, a company commander in the Da Vinci Wolves Battalion. According to NV, he emphasized the critical importance of new technology: “If we lose the tech war, it’s game over for us.” Since the full-scale invasion began, Ukrainian engineers and defense forces have showcased a remarkable ability to push the boundaries of modern warfare. By 2022, Ukraine had already demonstrated the vast potential of drones.
In early 2024, Ukraine’s Air Force Command announced that electronic warfare (EW) systems had neutralized around 20 Russian missiles, marking a significant shift from reliance on air defense systems. On the night of Jan. 13, Russia launched 40 aerial attacks on Ukraine using cruise, aeroballistic, ballistic, and guided missiles, along with combat drones.
While air defenses shot down eight targets, 20 more failed to reach their destinations thanks to EW countermeasures. Over the year, this has become routine, with reports consistently highlighting the growing share of Russian missiles intercepted by EW systems.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted this as a “game-changing” advancement in Ukraine’s EW capabilities, which had previously been used primarily to disable drones rather than missiles.
n August 2024, footage surfaced showing a Ukrainian anti-aircraft FPV drone intercepting a Russian reconnaissance UAV. For comparison, Russian ZALA drones cruise at speeds of up to 120 km/h, while Orlan-10 UAVs can reach 150 km/h. Standard FPV drones average around 80 km/h. Shooting down these drones with traditional air defense systems is prohibitively expensive, prompting the evolution of faster, more durable anti-aircraft FPV drones.
In September 2024, the “Wild Hornets” community announced that their FPV drone had achieved a record speed of 325 km/h. Another similar drone, Elf-P, was recently discussed by Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. The developers are now optimizing it to counter Shahed drones. The 13th Brigade of the National Guard, known as Khartia, is testing the use of robots and artificial intelligence for military operations, particularly in high-risk scenarios. In early December, Khartia conducted Ukraine’s first fully robotic combat operation in the Kharkiv sector. The operation utilized various UAVs—heavy multi-rotor bombers, surveillance drones, and FPVs—as well as ground-based robotic systems for tasks like demining, logistics, and kamikaze strikes.

It’s important to note that Russia has often cited NATO’s potential expansion as a justification for its actions in Ukraine, but this argument doesn’t hold up against the principles of sovereignty and self-determination that is inherent in NATO doctrine. NATO’s open-door policy allows any European country that meets its standards and principles to apply for membership. This policy is based on the idea that sovereign nations have the right to choose their own security arrangements. This doctrine is in contrast to Russian doctrine that supports the use of threats and force to gain territory from other sovereign nations throughout its history.

Clearly presenting the flaws in Putin’s justifications for his military operation in Ukraine is essential to countering the narrative Putin is trying to project. By systematically addressing and refuting each of his arguments, the international community can highlight the unjust and illegal nature of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Here’s a breakdown of key points to focus on:

    SOVEREIGNTY and SELF-DETERMINATION:

Emphasize Ukraine’s right to make its own choices as an independent, sovereign nation. Russia’s aggression violates these fundamental principles.

    NATO EXPANSION:

Clarify that NATO’s open-door policy allows countries to apply for membership voluntarily. There is no coercion or forced expansion as is inherent in Russia’s doctrine of expansionism with force.

Ukraine’s desire to join NATO is based on its own security interests, not a NATO-driven agenda.

    THE MINSK AGREEMENTS:

Highlight that the Minsk agreements are focused on conflict resolution in Eastern Ukraine and do not prohibit NATO membership. Russia’s use of these agreements to justify its actions is a misrepresentation.

    HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

Remind the world that Crimea’s annexation in 2014 was widely condemned and not recognized by the international community. Ukraine’s territorial integrity includes Crimea.

    HUMANITARIAN IMPACT

Share the devastating humanitarian consequences of Russia’s invasion, including civilian casualties, displacement, and destruction. This underscores the urgency of supporting Ukraine.

    COMMUNICATION STRATEGY: Global Media Outreach:

Utilize news networks, social media platforms, and international publications to disseminate these points widely.

    Unified Statements:

Coordinate with NATO members, EU leaders, and other allies to issue joint statements that clearly outline the illegitimacy of Putin’s claims.

    PUBLIC ADVOCACY:

Engage with influential figures, activists, and organizations to amplify the message and keep public attention focused on the issue.

    VERY ASSENTIAL:

By maintaining a consistent and united front, the international community can effectively challenge and disprove Putin’s narrative, strengthening support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
