Haenyeo, meaning “women of the sea” in Korean, are a dwindling group of mostly older, female divers who live and work on South Korea’s Jeju Island harvesting seafood from the ocean. These older Korean women risk their lives each day harvesting sea snails and sea urchins to support their children and families. One haenyeo and restaurateur, Nam Young Kim, has been diving for over 40 years. At her restaurant, Gapadosiktak, she prepares some of the highest quality uni and abalone, or sea snails, for people in Seogwipo who have never tried them before.

These ladies are so cool, and I bet the life stories they tell their grandchildren are legendary!
Love a country without a social safety net. Its great if they do this because they want to, but lets be real, for most its a neccessity because otherwise they would starve. I dont see why this is celebrated, its just sad
I respect it
but this is something ill never want to eat even if I was starving😂
Respect to these ladies. My Korean grandma is around there age. She is very good at cooking yet now days her limbs are becoming weaker due to old age. These halmeonnis are amazing and brave to be working this hard in the sea. I want to eat these so bad
This is a serious workout for the age of the ladies
