A.V. Club Inventory: Horrors Of The Big City

The Onion’s pop-culture-focused sister publication, The A.V. Club, is debuting a new weekly video series called “Inventory,” based on its popular lists of the same name.

Thinking about spending some time in the big city? Well, think again. Danger awaits around every corner, from menacing urbanites to confusing big city ways. This weeks Inventory covers three films that reveal the terrible things awaiting those who venture into America’s metropolises, from the confounding New York bohemia of After Hours to the terrifying Chicago of Adventures In Babysitting to the Michael Douglas-terrorized L.A. of Falling Down. For the full list of urban terrors, go here:

  1. First time watching an AV segment, disappointed with no jokes, but pretty fun to watch still

  2. 5:09 Wait, is that Albert Collins? :O

I’d also like to add to the list Taxi Driver. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it.

  3. @slizzdogg It’s still a stereotype even if it’s partially true. Some homeless people might live in parks, but not all of them do, and not all inner-city parks are filled with homeless people. Some Asian people might own corner stores, but not every corner store is owned by an Asian person. Some gangs might be exclusively Hispanic, but not every gang is exclusively Hispanic, and not every Hispanic person is a gang member.

  4. @dinolandra Aside from maybe a few backwoods racists, I’m pretty sure that nobody out there thinks that ALL Hispanic people are gang members, or any of the other things you said. All I’m saying is that these people (stereotypes or not) undeniably exist in the real world, and to omit their portrayal from a movie for the sake of political correctness would have severely taken away from the realism of the film. The filmmakers aren’t bigots just because they attempted an accurate portrayal of LA.

  5. I really like these AV club videos. They remind me of the “I love the” series from 10 or so years ago, which I viewed more as a mandatory pop culture bootcamp instead of entertainment.

  6. @slizzdogg Haha, agreed with your statement. There’s a difference between flat out racist content and jokes and reality. Cities are cultural melting pots. By nature people would rather fit in with a certain group.

  7. A great example of this is a 1940s race film called The Blood of Jesus that LITERALLY uses rural settings vs the big city to symbolize the war between God and Satan for a young woman’s soul. It’s just…. perfectly nuts. The whole thing’s online too. You’ll be in pain from how hard the heavy handed allegory beats you over the head.

  8. Oh, this is older than the Reagan presidency. As far as New York it goes back to the sixties.

  9. the thing about falling down is ur led to believe that michael douglas is just a normal guy pushed too far, until his wife is introduced and u find out hes always been a psycho

  10. Falling Down is so obviously a satire that you have to wonder quite how horrible 1990s race relations were that people didn’t recognize that.

  11. Falling Down isn’t racist simply because minorities exist in its story. Most of the fights the main character gets into are with whites. LA is a very diverse area, not showing any diversity would be misleading.

    1. All the the things they talk about, Korean store owns, Mexican gang members, parks full of homeless and symbols of a do nothing bureaucracy are things that existed then and still exist to this day.
