A.V. Club Inventory: Great Films Too Painful To Watch Twice

The Onion’s pop-culture-focused sister publication, The A.V. Club, is debuting a new weekly video series called “Inventory,” based on its popular lists of the same name.
Okay, as Scott Tobias would be quick to point out, these are great films that everyone involved has seen repeatedly. But that doesn’t mean they’re easy viewing no matter how many times we’ve seen them. Once you’re done, be sure to check out the original Inventory that inspired it:

  1. I think another nominee on this list could be 2000’s Chinese WWII film, “Devils on the Doorstep”. Definitely worth a watch…. once.

  2. Shallow Hal was always hard to watch for me when they go to the children’s hospital.

  3. Surprised there was not more mention of Requiem. That film is like the definition of depressing.

  4. Glad they had Come and See in the list at the end. It’s one of the most horrifying movies I’ve ever seen, considering the plotline probably really did happen to hundreds if not thousands of people in WW2

  5. The small girl in The Seventh Continent is the German voice actress of Sailor Moon.

  6. How could One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest not make this list? It’s not painful in the sense that it’s gory or shocking, but the ending of that film, whilst amazing, is so emotionally exhausting that I just can’t sit through that movie again knowing what fate awaits the main character. It’s an incredible piece of cinema but it’s too hard to watch again.

  7. I agree. These were awesome. And RFAD I agree about, except for Jennifer Connelly near the end. That is something else.

  8. Last House on the Left sucked they didn’t mention all the shitty scenes with the idiot cops

  9. Hello, Requiem for a dream! It might not be as graphic as some others, but it is such a real portrayal of addiction.

  10. Naw, ‘Salo: 120 Days of Sodom’. It’s basically just Weekend At Epstein’s, but without John Podesta.
