Plastic pollution is getting worse — despite widespread public awareness of the problem, massive investment in recycling, and years of pledges to stop polluting. So what do we get wrong when we talk about ocean plastic? A lot, it turns out.
Business Insider Producer Elizabeth McCauley dives into the scientific literature and talks to experts to find out how we actually solve this problem.

Trying to make individuals feel guilty about their behaviour, is a controlling method used by ruling powers for literally centuries – one need only look at religions and despotic leaders of the past. An example of more benign behaviour control is, that when we were kids, we were taught that we must eat all our food, because “the poor children in Africa don’t even have food”. We were even told that there is only a limited amount of water on the planet, so we must not waste it. There are many examples of how we are being fooled into thinking that “it’s all our fault”, thereby inferring our “guilt”. With all that said, I do think that we could be more responsible and more proactive regarding pollution. The key thing is to strike a balance between what is reasonable and do-able, opposed to a fanatical, almost religious approach that some people desire.
But we’re not lying about plastic in general. It is everywhere and continues to pile up because we continue to use it.
Use the energy content in plastic . Let us burn the waste and use the heat.
Great informative video!!!
I knew most of it from reading “boring stuff” ahahah but it is good for everyone to know the summary in a nice and light manner!
Take a drive anywhere and you will see litter. I live on a small gravel road with very little traffic where I walk my dog daily. I pick up water bottles and other garbage on almost every single walk and I doubt we even have 50 cars go down the road on average. I also live on Trent River in Ontario, Canada and there are CONSTANTLY plastic objects to pick up on the shoreline. People are always throwing things in the ditch or in the river. Now add that kind of mentality of littering to a bigger scale and that’s a hell of a lot of plastic ending up in bigger bodies of water. Watch The Ocean Cleanup’s videos. They’re getting huge amounts of plastic from rivers that would have ended up in the oceans. I don’t think we’re being lied to at all. It’s mind boggling how much plastic people throw into rivers that lead to oceans.
