Serving life in prison for murdering their parents, Lyle and Erik Menendez speak out in this documentary examining the shocking crime and ensuing trials.
I’ve seen the documentary, and I don’t believe they were telling the truth. It feels like they were trying to make it look like they were preparing to escape prison so that the cells would get searched, and the guards would find the letter Lyle wrote to Erik, telling him to destroy it after reading. Then, Erik kept it for emotional reasons. C’mon, those guys have such a tight bond that Erik would never keep the letter if Lyle really told him to destroy it. And then, of course, there’s the spending of the money right after the murders.
Yes, I do believe their dad, José, was very driven and in control. He built everything up again after moving from Cuba to America, so he’s obviously not lazy. Maybe he could be demanding because of this personality trait. That doesn’t make you an abuser or even a bad dad.
And the poor mother… When Erik was talking about how he loved his mom—and his dad, for that matter—that’s because they were worthy of his love. The brothers mix truths in with the lies to make everything more believable. So, when they say they loved their parents, that, to me, means they were good people. The dad may have been authoritarian, but that doesn’t mean he was abusive.
Just looking at their parents’ eyes in those photographs, you can see they’re plain, normal people. Their gaze doesn’t strike me as evil. That’s subjective, of course, but that’s what I feel when I look at those pictures.
Horror Trivia. This murder was the reason Fright Night Part 2 got a bad release and has never seen the light of day since its VHS rental because of this murder of its studio head and a bungled sale of the rights. See wiki.
