In “The Deserter,” Sarah A. Topol reports the story of Ivan, a captain in the Russian Army who fought in Ukraine and then ultimately fled the war and his country with his wife, Anna. Topol spoke to 18 deserters while reporting in eight countries across four continents over the last year and a half; their experiences helped paint a vivid picture of the Russian war operation and its corruption, chaos and brutality.
Narrated by Liev Schreiber.
“The Deserter” is a five-part special series in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine.

A cliff hanging story….wonderful narration and horrible insight into the desperation and waste of war.
They have uploaded parts 4 & 5
A wonderfully written piece. I was captivated from the beginning. I’m sure that this is all the very truth. However, it could have been written not very differently from the perspective of an Ukrainian soldier. This war could have been avoided and many lives spared.
great story and narration, for three hours I was back in the country that I had escaped and grew to hate. Thank you to everybody who was involved in this production.
How so similar is the experience of the average russian so similar to the average life here in Egypt. Repressive governments kill the soul of their people
