Voluntourism is when primarily western, privileged do-gooders pay for the experience of doing charity work abroad. But according to this ex-voluntourist, the orphanage she thought she was building was actually disassembled and remade throughout the night.
Not only that but children were dirtied up to make them look poorer to add to the voluntourists’ experience. Children were made to sing and dance for them – and worse.
We give an inside glimpse into this sham world, where people pay for the experience of charity without actually helping locals – and often even making their lives worse.

The punchline of the film is: do not help by sending materialistic stuff outside of your own country because they will probably end up of helping criminals. First help to those who are around you.
Save the children x
I love her commetns, and hate the “volunteer” programs, they’re exploitative AF.
When I was in high school I hosted a “volunteer” kid, Asian-American, uptight, aloof, and really arrogant.
I was in a public school back then (I hated it) and they connected with a couple of Us school through a teacher. She thought she was gonna go to a poor house with dirt floors when I took her home that day. So, she was annoyed when she saw my parents’ house, which is quite, big: three bedrooms, all of them with ensuites, mine had a tub. The patio is so big it can fit a tiny house, and my dad has his own private studio and inner patio. Took him and my mother 20 years to save money to build that house.
She called her mother that night and told her that they ripped her off, that we were rich (we’re not) and that how she was gonna get the real Mexican experience like that. We had been told they knew Spanish, so we could speak the language to them. She barely knew any Spanish, in reality, and assumed I knew no English because I was at a public school. Her face when I asked her why she was annoyed and that if she didn’t know Mexico is very varied and there’s different social statuses… it was priceless.
Christ, are there ANY decent people in the world? Starting to think Phoenix’s Joker had a point.
