South Korea opposition files motion to impeach Yoon | BBC News 2

South Korea’s opposition lawmakers have begun impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

The country woke up to an uncertain reality on Wednesday after a night of unprecedented scenes which saw Yoon unexpectedly impose martial law, 190 lawmakers gather to vote it down, and a sudden reversal of the decision around six hours later.

After introducing the impeachment motion, South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party condemned Yoon’s initial martial law declaration as “insurrectionary behaviour”.

Parliament will have to vote on whether to impeach Yoon by Saturday.

  1. I am a South Korean citizen. South Korea, like the United States, has two major political parties.

One party is called the “Democratic Party,” which pursues pro-China and pro-North Korea policies. It is similar to Kamala Harris’s Democratic Party in the U.S. (approximately 192 out of 300 members, including affiliates).

The other party, the “People Power Party,” supports pro-America policies and is similar to Donald Trump’s Republican Party (about 108 out of 300 members).

The current President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, is from the People Power Party and recently declared martial law.

The leader of the Democratic Party, who is comparable to Kamala Harris, is Representative Lee Jae-myung. He is also a current member of the National Assembly and, despite being recently convicted of violating the Public Official Election Act, is using his parliamentary immunity to lead efforts to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The Democratic Party holds the majority in the National Assembly with approximately 192 members out of 300.

Recently, President Yoon declared martial law for only two hours to investigate alleged election fraud. To prevent interference from the Democratic Party, the President intentionally avoided notifying the public through text messages during this time. Meanwhile, he executed a pre-planned operation to successfully raid the National Election Commission (NEC) and seize all election-related materials. Once the raid was completed, martial law was lifted. (According to the South Korean Constitution, the NEC can only be brought under government control during martial law and is otherwise an independent body.)

Currently, the President is gathering evidence of election fraud through the National Intelligence Service. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is pushing for the President’s impeachment through a vote in the National Assembly. If 200 out of 300 members vote in favor, the investigation into election fraud will stop, and President Yoon will be impeached.

Today, on December 7, a vote for impeachment was held. The Democratic Party and progressive forces secured 192 votes out of 300, but the motion was defeated. If just 8 more votes are secured in the future, President Yoon could be impeached before the investigation into election fraud is concluded.

As someone who deeply admires Donald Trump, I hope he will issue a statement of support for South Korea during this critical time. Such a declaration could help prevent election fraud and protect the pro-America policies that South Korea has upheld for the past 70 years.

For example, the Democratic Party recently cut the annual budget for nuclear energy, which is supported by Donald Trump, by 50% while doubling the budget for environmental projects favored by China.

  2. Yoon Seok-yeol seems to need special mental care, and should step down a.s.a.p.
The reason President Yoon Seok-yeol staged this absurd coup d’état is because he only believed in the conspiracy of a small number of abnormal far-right forces and closed his ears to the voices of the majority of normal citizens.
Many doctors suspect that Yoon Seok-yeol has been exposed to a small number of extreme right-wing forces and a small number of extreme right-wing YouTuber channels for a considerable period of time, which led to a distorted perception of reality and delusions of grandeur.
The fundamental cause of this coup d’état is not only Yoon Seok-yeol himself, but also the extreme right-wing forces that are eating away at the Republic of Korea, which is made up of abnormal perception of reality, illogical judgment, and disgust, and the unethical behavior of the ruling party members who are trying to use these abnormal forces as leverage for their own selfish desires and gains.
