This is a hands-on review of the new Google Nest Cam Outdoor Wired (2025 release) — Google’s latest smart security camera. In this video, I compare it against the previous Nest Cam (battery/wired model) to test setup, video quality, low-light performance, and reliability.

Thank you for this video! I haven’t been able to find any review videos of the new Google Nest cameras!
Did you happen to test out any of the new Gemini features related to the camera?
@CarlPugh Actually it does not look like enhanced zoom will work on 2016 Nest Outdoor cam.
What about the implementation of Gemini? I have 10 Nest cams in and around my house. First generation wired. The only camera that seems to identify everything consistently is the newer one in the Livingroom which is an IQ model. The others all just say motion, person, etc. the IQ will literally tell me my cat just jumped on the couch. If the newer models incorporate Gemini like the IQ does then I’ll be replacing all 10 cans over the course of the year. Just ordered 1 for the driveway to do some AI comparisons. Have you noticed the upgrade in AI?
Actually the new Gemini features are part of the Google Home Premium (formerly called Nest Aware) subscription. They will work on the whole line of Nest products including the older cameras. However Google is rolling these new features out slowly so they are not available widely yet. If you have a a Nest Aware subscription it will automatically be converted to a Google Home Premium subscription so no need to do anything.
@CarlPughso I have a few cameras that it’s working with not all. Yet
@CarlPughcame back to say they’re all working smoothly with Gemini
Were you able to test differences in the built-in speaker?
Sorry I did not test the speaker.
Can the new Outdoor wired (2025) use the existing weatherproof four pin cable for the old Nest Cam battery? I didn’t see you unplug the main cable attached to the new camera (2025) at any point.
Unfortunately they have changed the power connector so you cannot use any existing wiring.
This was a missed opportunity by Google. If they had kept same power connection mounting option, people would be more inclined to upgrade knowing it’s just a simple swap of the head unit. But if the wiring has to be redone and those wires go through a wall, coupled with a mid performance improvement…. Hard pass
Agree. Was keen to buy one of the new cameras to replace the one at our front entrance, but this is wired through a wall to an internal socket. Given the comparisons in this video, the hassles of rewiring for little image quality improvement makes this a pass.
I like Google most of their products but the camera is the trash still using 1080P when it should be 2K 4K by now and also no built-in alarm,or lights So how you supposed to scare someone away and a subscription fee equals all? That is a big hell no for me!!!!!!!!!
And what is funny is you can literally walk up to the camera and grab it and it won’t even detect you.
You do realize the new second gen that just came out is 2K right?
It’s in 2k now I believe
It is 2025, don’t even buy anything less than 4K
It’s a constant upload. Gets real heavy with shitty ISP’s
I personally find these a rip off when you got pan and tilt cameras out there that you don’t need subscriptions for.
No subscription is required for live streaming and up to six hours of event recording.
@CarlPughevent recording is a joke. 24/7 continuous recording is the only way to go. Clips seems to fail at given a complete picture.
Google has terrible cameras. Also zero customer service. Nobody to talk to. I have just spent hundreds to replace all my Nest cameras with Eufy. I am AMAZED with their far superior product with zero monitoring fees. Eufy is absolutely amazing.
Is the zoom improved in quality? In my setup, my car is parked in an area where lots of other cars pass by. I have the older generation, wired, but from about 25 feet onwards you can’t make out the number plates of the cars, including mine where my parking space is. I’d upgrade if it could capture more details. Have you tested zoom by any chance? Thank you for making the video.
I have tested the zoom but can see no meaningful difference in clarity.
Can it just be slapped onto a metal surface and stay in place without “proper” installation like the battery version?
Unfortunately no!
Yes. The new cameras use the same magnetic attachment system.
Nice comparison. That side by side Old vs New capture is disappointing. 🤔The camera resolution spec should’ve had a bigger visual difference on a device that could display that 2K res and above. I’m thinking there’s something not quite right yet and a near future firmware update will fix / improve the quality.
Man is ring the only ones with color night time
No, the EUFY S3 Pro has AMAZING color at night viewing and virtually no ghosting. I was blow away by it. However the EUFY software is terrible in my opinion. I dream would be to have the EUFY S3 PRO cam work with the Google Home software.
I wonder if the blink outdoor camera 2k is better than the blink outdoor 4.
Well done review👍 I have the gen 1 and dont see much of a difference in the video quality so I will wait till these ones crap out before buying next gen
The Gemini AI features are pretty cool. I’ve had them for about two weeks now. My backyard camera used to alert me, “animal detected.” Now it says, “a rabbit hopped across your grass.” It even correctly identified a bobcat this week!
Is it possible that the lack of quality difference in the old vs new feeds is because you do not have a fast internet connection and it is downgrading? The specs do say that resolution is dependent on this.
I did see that reference and checked to insure my connection was very high (>250mbps).
It’s worth noting that a fast internet connection alone won’t get the best results. A strong and stable WiFi signal is very important. Google states only circa 3mbps bandwidth is required for 2k resolution.
Thumbs up for the bobcat!
Thank you for your review. The lack of improvement from 1080P to 2K is not worth upgrading for me.
Wont upgrade- don’t have Bobcats in my area.
Does anyone else you not find you get delays when you try load a notification that just happened?
