It took a rock ‘n’ roll flare to get Hip Hop on MTV in the first place, but the effect of this crossover endures through the decades. As TV’s home for all popular music, the network’s cultural impact fed back into itself, platforming rappers and rockers who grew up on MTV, taking in both genres and mashing them together, creating new music that defied the sections of the record store. In this installment of The MTV Effect, Dometi Pongo draws the line from Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith performing “Walk This Way” to emo rap acts like Juice WRLD and Lil Uzi Vert.
