Authorities have confirmed a major development in the Liam Payne death investigation. Weeks after the One Direction singer suffered a fatal fall from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Oct. 16, local police announced that three people have been charged in connection to the incident. In a press release made public on Nov. 7, Argentina’s prosecutor’s office confirmed that the suspects face charges of abandonment and supply and facilitation of narcotics. The first person accused is believed to be a friend of Payne’s who police say accompanied him daily throughout his stay in Buenos Aires. The second and third defendants, one of whom is a now-former employee of the hotel where Payne was staying, are accused of supplying drugs to the pop star. It was not immediately clear when the unnamed individuals were due in court but the release noted that a request for their arrests was submitted on Nov. 1. According to the release, a judge authorized nine police raids in the days leading up to the charges and prosecutors analyzed more than 800 hours of surveillance footage from the hotel and public roads in addition to receiving several dozen testimonies. The news comes after Payne’s body was cleared to be returned to his father and flown back to the U.K. An initial toxicology report found a substance known as “pink cocaine” in the singer’s system at the time of his death.
