Laos backpackers avoid shots after suspected Methanol poisonings | BBC News 7

Suspected methanol poisoning from tainted drinks has reportedly killed six tourists in a Laos holiday town in the past fortnight.

A British woman, two Australian women, a US man and two Danish nationals have died.

The deaths remain under police investigation, but reports have suggested they may have consumed drinks tainted with methanol, a deadly substance often found in bootleg alcohol.

Methanol poisoning has long been a well-known issue across South East Asia, particularly in the poorer countries along the Mekong river.

But despite foreign governments posting warnings about alcohol consumption in these places, there is still little awareness among the backpacker party scene.

  1. My dad died thirty years ago drinking with some friends no one else he was drinking with got sick and the police didn’t find out how my dad got methanol no one else in our area has ever died while drinking regular alchol

  2. Even the liquor in the bottle may be illegal. Therefore, when you come to Southeast Asia, please purchase alcohol in reliable convenience stores. Don’t buy from the common people who set up sales tables in front of their homes. Because selling alcohol in Thailand only requires a license from the authorities. Not everyone can sell.

  3. If people refused to vacation in Laos, they’d fix the issue real damn fast. Marking this place off of my map of places to visit.
