Japan has – for the first time – issued a warning about an increased risk of a “major earthquake” striking in the near future.
The advisory was issued on Thursday night local time, telling people to be alert but not to evacuate. It also stressed that the warning did not mean a large earthquake was imminent, but that the probability was higher than usual.
It came hours after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the southern island of Kyushu, which reportedly caused no major damage.

They have very excellant earthquake builders in Japan.
We just had a mega-quake in 2011.
For me megaquake would be 8-9.0. But japan has like 1-7. Only certain times been 9.0
7 obviously destroy buildings, but its not same as Kobe or 2011 earthquakes
The situation in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State, is critical, with nearly 200 displaced persons in refugee camps suffering from skin diseases. The outbreak is attributed to the contamination of water sources, such as wells and ponds, which were inundated with saline water following floods. The refugees are unable to access clean drinking water, leading to the spread of these skin diseases.
Camp authorities have expressed an urgent need for medical supplies, particularly chlorine for disinfecting water and medicines to treat the skin infections. The lack of access to clean water and proper medical care, compounded by the difficulty in reaching medical facilities, has exacerbated the situation. The outbreak has affected people of all ages, with symptoms appearing on various parts of the body, including the hands, back, arms, between fingers, head, and abdomen.
The broader region, including Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw, Minbya, and Mrauk-U townships, has also been impacted by flooding, leading to further contamination of water sources. The situation is dire, especially since the military council has restricted the importation of medicines since 2021, with a complete ban imposed from November 13, 2023, resulting in severe shortages of essential drugs.
