In Germany you may opt in to download an app from the insurance, that sends all the details to the insurence company. Esentialy eliminating the middle Data Broker. In the track data there is beeing recorded and getting penalized for : Acceleration, Braking Speeding, Harsh Cornering, Use of the phone, time of the day eg : driving on rush hours and not least the gps track. The App requires all the posible permissions to be enabled all the time and not only that it tracks trips but also movement outside of your car. As often it shows the notification it started recording, even though I am far away from the car.
The recorded data is shown to you but as soon as it is recorded there is no delete button, if you manage to drive nice you get a reduction, instead of paying more. Actualy that is the seling point: “Drive (Nice) and save Money”, up to ariound 300 Euros per year.
some of the people getting higher insurance premiums many times have nothing to do with the car they are driving or the data being sent. As he mentioned in this video, insurance companies are pulling data from LexisNexis. This has been going on for way longer than cars sending data out. If you have bad credit, bounced checks, and public records with judgements and lawsuits…these are all in LexisNexis databases. Its been well known for many years they use this to hike insurance premiums as they consider people with bad credit, judgements, etc. to be a “higher risK’ for accidents, etc.
i knew this was gonna happen as soon as they started implementing cameras and other advanced technology into this cars and it’s no coincidence that a lot of companies are advertising “selfie cameras” in their cars as a feature…
Many gadgets, computers both in the house, on telephones and now in cars are both useful and intrusive. This will only increase as time goes by. We must restrict this to minimal collection and only for the users’ benefit. Mo information should be shared with third party companies.
