Since the end of the pandemic, Americans have been observing a surprising increase in the number of establishments asking for tips—spots that hadn’t suggested gratuities previously, in amounts sometimes approaching thirty percent or more. With decades of established consumer behavior evaporating seemingly overnight, this talk explores why we need to ponder where tipping culture is headed and what can be done to change the course of the “tipflation” trend that is about much more than mere pocket change.
Known in the media as Mister Manners, I’m a keynote speaker, workshop leader, syndicated columnist and TV commentator who engages audiences of all types to practice and perfect courtesy and consideration in their interactions. I’m a regular guest on the NBC “Today” show, where I field questions on modern-day etiquette dilemmas. In 2017, we debuted “Manners on the Move,” a special multi-part “Today” show series that examined incivility in America. My corporate clients have included the United States Department of Commerce, the Estée Lauder Companies, the Walt Disney Corporation, the American Automobile Association (AAA), the U.S. Army, Viacom, Toyota and UPS, among others. My syndicated weekly column, “Mealtime with Mister Manners,” appears on TODAY.com, and my insights feature regularly in other media as well, including the “New York Times,” the “Los Angeles Times,” “Wired,” “USA Today,” CNN, VH1, ABC and on radio stations across the U.S. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I only tip my barber if I get a good haircut that’s it hahah
I will always tip at dine-in restaurants like the good ol days. I do the BARE minimum, usually like 2 or 3 bucks when I order uber eats or door dash, which is already very rare simply as a pity “thank you, but I’m only tipping just because.”
I stopped going out to dine because of this guilt-tipping practice. It really shouldn’t be the customer’s RESPONSIBILITY TO SUBSIDIZE an employee’s paycheck!!
End tipping culture now!!!
