A broken jaw is a recognised risk in contact sports like boxing, and beyond the obvious pain and difficulty with chewing or speaking, it can carry specific neurological risks. Fractures of the mandible can injure the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve, which supplies sensation to the lower lip, chin, teeth, and part of the tongue, as well as motor control to the muscles of chewing. Damage or compression of this nerve can lead to numbness, tingling, altered sensation, or weakness in jaw movement, which may be temporary or, in some cases, long-lasting. The management of a jaw fracture depends on whether the bone fragments remain aligned. If the fracture is displaced, meaning the pieces of bone have shifted out of position, the jaw often cannot heal correctly on its own. In these cases, surgical fixation is usually required to realign and stabilise the bone, often using plates, screws, or wiring. Early assessment is important, as prompt treatment reduces the risk of poor healing, chronic pain, bite problems, and persistent nerve symptoms.
