Chris Lake Makes A Tech-House Track From Scratch

In the latest episode of our Beat From Scratch series, we join Chris Lake at W1 Curates Studios London to learn the secrets behind his productions.

Over the course of the past two decades, Chris Lake has become a staple in electronic music, from his earliest bootlegs of tracks by The Prodigy, Leftfield and Eurythmics, and legendary singles like ‘Changes’, ‘If You Knew’ and ‘Stay With Me’, to his collaborations and remixes with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Missy Elliot, Fisher, Green Velvet and Aluna.

Here, he breaks down the skills and tricks that make his tracks so irresistible, showcasing how he works within Ableton and passing on some helpful advice on studio workflow.

Beat from Scratch is a unique insight into an artist’s creative process in the studio. Starting from a blank session, each artist builds a track from scratch in their own style, exploring everything from drum and synth programming to mixing, arrangement and more.

  1. Why do some producers use straight drag in drop samples, like kicks and hats and other stuff while others use midi drums from a sampler. I’ve actually never asked this but can someone let me know why you use one or the other? I tend to use straight one shot samples into my mix

  2. Interesting way to capture Ute that synth.
Short rec time and a stack of takes seems like it would take longer to find the good parts.

    …interesting for sure.

  3. Sitting in a random studio in London, surrounded by expensive gear… and it’s all in the Ableton box. ..And why not? He might as well have done this sitting in a fish and chip shop on headphones
