A. R. Rahman reacts to controversy over BBC interview comments | BBC News India

On Sunday, music composer and singer AR Rahman shared a video responding to the controversy stirred by his comments during an interview with BBC Asian Network.

In the interview, while answering a question about discrimination in Bollywood, the legendary musician said he had ‘never felt’ it. But he added that over the past eight years, he had seen a ‘power shift’ in the industry, with non-creative executives gaining more decision-making power than they had before.

He added that this ‘might have been a communal thing’. This remark led to controversy, after other Bollywood artists – like This remark led to controversy, after other Bollywood artists – like singer Shaan and lyricist Javed Akhtar – called Rahman’s comments a misrepresentation without clear evidence.

Many people have also expressed support for the musician. In his video response, Rahman said that ‘intentions can sometimes be misunderstood’ and stressed that he never wished to cause anyone pain. ‘I feel blessed to be Indian, which has enabled the creation of a space which always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multi-cultural voices,’ he added.

  1. indians have understood – what you have said !!!
it has become a fashion and intention to play the Victim Card !!!
you worked here – earned money, respect and everything but after so long and getting everything – your statement is very unfortunate !!!
in our country where there is no bias in the field of art, culture, music and cinema – the majority of people are very liberal and admire music – there are so many people from minority communities working with pride in various positions in different sectors !!!
this kind of statement tarnishes the image of the country and creates division !!!

  2. 5 of his 7 National Awards were gotten during the tenure of the BJP government. How can it be communal then?
Also, he needs to explain why he was behaving in a communal way in lyricist Piraisoodan’s episode?

  3. In the World only Islamic thought process had/has attacked other religion. Muslims had/has attacked Christian+Hindus+Jews +Buddhist +Parsi (Zoroastrianism)+Sikh+Others. Muslims had destroyed others Religious sites. If people wants to verify the fact they should verify it with authentic data.

  4. As a south Indian,
What was the need Rehman? U are spreading false news, If the people of India were communal then you wouldn’t be what you are today, We have loved you irrespective of your personal choices, Aren’t you the music composer of Ramayana?…A christian and a muslim is making music for Ramayana, What more should we do, Aren’t Hindus more tolerant than anyone else in the world?
