US President Donald Trump sues BBC for defamation over Panorama speech edit | BBC News

US President Donald Trump has filed a $5bn (£3.7bn) lawsuit against the BBC over an edit of his 6 January 2021 speech in a Panorama documentary.

Trump accused the broadcaster of defamation and of violating a trade practices law, according to court documents filed in Florida.

The BBC apologised to Trump in November, but rejected his demands for compensation and disagreed there was any “basis for a defamation claim”.

Trump’s legal team accused the BBC of defaming him by “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech”.

“You chose to do that?” Dreher asked.

“I was following presidential orders, but yes,” Thompson said.

  6. That evening, Trump celebrated and justified his mob’s violence, tweeting “These are the things and events that happen” when a so-called election victory is “unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots. … Remember this day forever!”

  7. Days earlier, Mr. Trump had told his supporters to descend on Washington on Jan. 6 for a “protest” that he promised would “be wild.”

  8. America has seen what the BBC’s lack of interest and support has done to their own citizens just like MSNBC, CNN, CBS, NBC and PBS.

  9. American here: Giving in right away will not silence criticism from Trump’s base, but it will increase criticism from the other end for giving in and causing a chilling effect. Then, in the long run, you have criticism from both ends. Theoretically not much can be done if you don’t pay it; unlike tech giants who have regional offices in other countries, you don’t and paying it is like letting him just wander over your borders unwelcome. This is intimidation- don’t give in
