no excuse for this, faults on the transmission system are supposed to clear within 4-8 cycles of system frequency, faults that last this long are normally detrimental to system stability and thankfully only a small area lost power

If you know what an arc welder or arc furnace is, you are basically looking at that, only at a MUCH higher voltage and uncontained.
