I don’t know if this helps, but I have autism with phoneme/auditory synesthesia and what it’s really like for me is kind of like when you rub your palms together really fast and make them hot and them put them over your closed eyes and you see little flashes of light in your peripheral vision, and for certain frequency ranges I’ll feel it on my skin, kind of like the tickling feeling you get from a shirt tag but all over, like getting goosebumps from a finding out a scary twist or realizing something terrifying, but in my experience at least it’s more that it’s triggered off of certain frequencies than it is some kind of color flash that gives you absolute pitch.
I would never assert to speak for all people or anything like that, but I would imagine if a vocal tone like that was setting off visual synesthesia sensory issues it would be pretty damn impossible to be a singer. I didn’t get my driver’s license until 37 because it was so oppressive.
Anyone else out there with a kind of synesthesia like what she’s talking about? Because I work with a lot of people with ASD and I’ve never heard of someone’s sensory system converting tones like that, despite meeting lots of people with absolute pitch.
