In episode four of THR’s special edition of ‘Behind the Screen,’ editors Stephen Rivkin and Jason Gaudio detail their innovative process in fascinating detail — including their presence on-set during performance-capture filming — while emphasizing the film’s adherence to traditional editing.

  1. Figuring out shots after the scene is already filmed sounds insanely cool. You let the scene speak first and edit to that. Hypothetically on the page a Jake and Neytiri scene could feel like a Jake moment. After shooting maybe later even years later maybe you realize it’s actually Neytiri’s. You can then reedit reframe and change every shot. It’s kinda mind breaking that this is even possible.

    1. @binchamers And the thing when they said they can capture just a face later and drop it onto an earlier performance. That’s wild and it changes how I see these films. I now think I even noticed it once.

In the scene with Quaritch and Spider, the one where he wears a hoodie. Lang suddenly sounds older when he talks about Spider’s mom. It feels like a quick sneaky reshoot clarification from TWOW feedback. But the crazy thing you’d never read it visually as a reshoot since Champion looks the same age.

  2. James Cameron is going to take a break from Avatar after Fire and Ash and will soon shift his attention to a new Terminator movie. While we’ve known Cameron has been writing a script for Terminator 7, the last we heard he had encountered writer’s block when trying to envision a future that won’t become reality by the time the film releases. More recently however, it sounds like he found his niche and will actively begin work on a new Terminator film sooner rather than later. However, fans should not get their hopes up seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role again, nor should they anticipate any cameos or callbacks. From the sounds of it, James Cameron is starting with a blank slate, a new Terminator story devoid of tethers to previous installments.

    1. @BloodStoriesAreReal Im sure hell be hands on with avatar it would make sense since its his story. but if he does do a 5th one i could see him handing over to another director he trusts while he works on other stuff.

  3. I can’t get enough of this universe. Have seen all 3 in 3d in IMAX multiple times. Can’t wait for home release extended edition for all 3.

  4. I enjoy & appreciate the Avatar movies; however, I have to say, the Na’vi skin texture & features look more real in Avatar 2 than in Avatar 3. I wonder what skin tone process(es) may have changed from Avatar 2 to Avatar 3?

  5. This masterpiece is the product of intentional human creativity. Not random and common instant slop from non-creatives.
