A.V. Club Inventory: Protested Movies

The Onion’s pop-culture-focused sister publication, The A.V. Club, is debuting a new weekly video series called “Inventory,” based on its popular lists of the same name.

Not all movies are designed to please everyone, but some go even further, igniting controversy wherever they play. This week, we look at three films protested for very different reasons: the killer Santa movie Silent Night, Deadly Night, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation Of Christ, and Basic Instinct.

  1. @angrydead If you’d ever actually taken the time to study the Bible, you would know that the Bible claims Christ was a perfect human being. He had no secret desires, as Christ clearly states more than once that sinful thoughts themselves are enough to damn a man’s soul. So how does a being sacrifice himself to take away the sin of the whole human race if he himself is sinful and condemned? You obviously don’t know enough about the subject to make ANY statements to the contrary.

  2. @angrydead Christ doesn’t express misgivings or insecurity. It had nothing to do with crucifixtion, He was already under God’s wrath at that point. He was in physical, emotional and spiritual pain. He was sweating blood. Yet he submitted to the Father’s will, despite the anguish. As for the statement at the beginning of the film, it’s as much of a farce as the rest. And it’s spelled “ad nauseam”. The more you argue, the more obvious it becomes that you aren’t very well educated at all

  3. @angrydead At least I can spell correctly. The simple fact that the movie makes a disclaimer about it being fictional means the film admits that it has little if anything to do with the Bible. Therefore, any analysis about the human nature of Christ BASED ON THE MOVIE is equally as fictional (ie. a lie), and cannot possibly provide any benefit at all to anyone seeking truth about Christ. How many times do I have to beat you on the head with the logic hammer before it sinks in?

  4. @angrydead Ok, you are really a moron. Non-ilitteral? Ilitteral isn’t even a word. And even if it was, it’s a double negative. Non-ilitteral would mean literal. And you keep misspelling “ad nauseam”, ad infinitum. Of course you’d know this, if you’d ever graduated high school. You should stop now, because you are just making yourself look like a bigger and bigger idiot. I’ve been showing these comments to my friends, all of whom are university graduates. You’re a laughingstock, buddy.

  5. @angrydead someone with a masters degree is arguing with a stranger in the youtube comments section? and i thought life got better with education 🙁

  6. @ewhite3746 He’s not educated. He just pretends that he is. He claims he has a Master’s degree, but he couldn’t argue that 1+1=2. He just keeps saying, “You are wrong and I’m right”, without any evidence at all to back up his claims. He repeatedly misspells simple words. If I had to guess, I’d say he graduated high school with a C average and any post-secondary education was in the trades.

  7. Was Ken Russells’s THE DEVILS protested? Or just banned everywhere? Still one of the most important films ever.

  8. Religious views aside, why do they seem confused on why “The Last Temptation Of Christ” would be more “offensive” to Christians than “The Passion of Christ”? Kind of seems straight forward to me. First is an alternative telling of the story, in which the corner stone of the faith is removed. Second is a very graphic and violent portrayal of the story, but with the Biblical ending.

That shouldn’t be a struggle to see why the two are different, even if you don’t believe any of it.

  9. @RaaronR Well the too much good friday comment came from one person so their generalization trying to point out hypocrisy between how the two films were received is flawed anyway

  10. @RaaronR It’s probably because religious belief has decreased over the years and isn’t as influincial as it was when Temptation of Christ was released.

Only because science has done a good job of refuting religious claims and ministers leave out more and more of the bible.

  11. I’m sure both Jesuses got all kinds of slizz, both the fictional version and the real world version.

  12. I never even heard about any of the “controversy” about Basic Instinct and I didn’t remember the lesbian part until I saw this video, lol.

  13. Man, Willem Dafoe went through a lot of shit in his career. For one, The Last Temptation of Christ. For second, Lars von Trier’s Antichrist – he gets his balls crushed and jacked off until he cums blood. Damn. Props to him.

  14. Willem Dafoe never got his balls Crushed!  They were all silly hollywood plastic thingys!

  15. My husband told me about a professor of his who had to go to trial to defend Caligula (1979) from being charged as pornography. He had to establish that there was enough historical accuracy to the film to deem it culturally “significant” on the grounds that it was somewhat educational.
