A.V. Club Inventory: Hilarious Onscreen Drug Freakouts

The Onion’s pop-culture-focused sister publication, The A.V. Club, is debuting a new weekly video series called “Inventory,” based on its popular lists of the same name.

From Reefer Madness onward, movies and TV have historically been pretty terrible at representing real-life drug use. (Harold And Kumar perhaps comes closest to reality.) This week, we explore hilarious onscreen drug freakouts, from the funny and accurate (Freaks And Geeks) to the ridiculously over-the-top (the inimitable Death Drug and Desperate Lives). If you want to read the full Inventory, which includes lots more entries, you’ll have to buy our book, conveniently titled Inventory.

  1. Death Drug is pretty great-too bad the guy talking about it is such a indie-eunuch manchild, complete with every sentence ending with a question mark (“this movie is really bad? and the masks are really cheap?”)…

  2. Nicolas Cage from Bad Lieutenant. Goddamn Cage owns every freakout, and there are multiple.

  3. how is it possible that reefer madness is not on this list? in case you don’t know it, it’s a 30’s anti-weed propaganda production that shows innocent teens freaking out after trying pot. it reached cult status amongst stoners. well deserved.

  4. this dumbass male bitch has clearly on smoked pot once in highschool after hours of peer pressure and thinks hes kingshit now

  5. FREAKS AND GEEKS. Great show, although the girl here didn’t even mention the best part of the drug freakout—when Lindsey is talking to the dog, imagining her life in his mind and shit. Hilarious.

  6. I’m somewhat disappointed. I thought the scenes were going to be extracted from live TV.

  7. My fridnd , who knows, made the point that if you switched weed for speed or coke, that movie would not be so funny.
It crossed my mind that coke freaks in the 30s, who could get good stuff cheap, and often shot it, may have also smoked reefer. And their behavior was blamed on reefer, because people could smell it.

  8. 3:00??? The medium of music videos actually did exist in 1978. Video for Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody which is considered as the first one ever was shot in 1975.

    1. panmoudrej You are absolutely right. They were gaining in popularity in the late 70’s. They were often shown during variety or talk shows. They were entertaining, especially as the 70’s saw a huge resurgence of theatre fans. I also think a big part of the draw was censorship. During a live performance, if a band (especially the counterculture kind of band) acted up, there was little the producers of the show could do (exhibit one: the Doors singing the word “higher” after being told not to do so). With these pre-packaged music videos, a show didn’t have to worry about what a band might sing or how they might dance (the Elvis’ Pelvis complex). It could be vetted ahead of time and shown without risk. I doubt they thought it was going to create a whole new medium.

Other early videos that I liked were “Staying Alive” by The Bee Gees (in which they are strutting and singing in what appears to be a ghost town), and Sister Sledge’s “We are Family” (which is hilarious when you realize that one of the band members couldn’t dance and eventually seemed to give up entirely).

  9. Angel Dusted isn’t featured here. It has a PCP freakout some 5-10 minutes into the movie..
