A.V. Club Inventory: Fictional Drugs

The Onion’s pop-culture-focused sister publication, The A.V. Club, is debuting a new weekly video series called “Inventory,” based on its popular lists of the same name.

Even in the wild world of recreational drug use, sometimes the real thing just isn’t enough. Sometimes writers need to imagine a narcotic with new effects–or new combinations of effects–to suit their needs. In this week’s Inventory, we explore Glint, Spank, and Melange. To read about those and 15 more, you can visit the original article from which this episode is derived. Seriously, visit, it’s fun.

  1. Number two drug on their fictional drug list at the end is soma, which is a brand name muscle relaxer.

  2. Best fictional drug ever is Heroin from Trainspotting. It just feels like something that could actually exist in the real world.

  3. Mine would be Myostatin, although it’s no longer fictional. It started out as a fictional drug in the pilot movie for The Incredible Hulk TV show from the 70’s. In the early 90’s, researchers looking into muscle growth discovered a particular gene sequence which regulates the body’s ability to grow large muscles without exercise. They named their gene Myostatin.

  4. Valkaria from Max Payne and weed ofcourse.Fictional or not weed is a answer !

  5. What about the pill in “Limitless”? Or the injections in “Flowers for Algernon”? Or the amphetamine in “Outland”?

  6. Before I saw the clip I thought the two seconds would be colbertnation (dot)

  7. Diss melange at your own peril, worms. Actually, semuta is the drug that all the cool kids in the Dune universe are taking.
