The Taylor Swift conversation was interesting because it just goes to show why hip hop is losing money and always goes down after it gets hot for a few years. Your fans WANT to see you. It’s why Beyonces products always fail. Hip hop and black artist get big and the first thing they do to “differentiate” themselves is try to be too cool for everything. Even the way we talk about the Oscars and other establishment events – love them or that them but they are markers in history of the moment and white artist understand the value in showing up and being marked present for those things. It maintains and leads into so many brand deals etc and there are a lot of music consumers who aren’t “too cool” to enjoy entertainment like MTV. We get lost in that narrative and that’s why BET can’t even get people when hip hop music is on top.
Taylor moves like a politician, but yeah VMAs are more pop music centric but rappers don’t even bother to show up to the BET hip/hop awards.
Y’all gotta do better on the recap as a hip hop station. A bit disappointing. No mention of Eminems opening or LLs medley performance? Didn’t discuss the hip hop category and who they thought should have won? A lot more could have been discussed rather than Travis Kelce’s US open outfit.
