If you found out that you were at a higher-than-average risk for cancer because of your family history, would you do something to reduce that risk? For most people, the answer is a resounding yes. But many people don’t know much about their family’s cancer history, and even when they do, it’s not clear what to do about it. Julie Walker, a genetic counselor and Charleston native, has some answers for you. When you know your risk and act on it, you can stop cancer in its tracks, she says. It’s called personalized medicine. Walker will walk you through it. Her hope is that community awareness will lead more people to assess their risks, make necessary changes to their health care and beat cancer in the Lowcountry.
Julie is a certified genetic counselor who received her BS in Genetics and Psychology from the University of Georgia and earned her MS in Genetic Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. After a few years in clinical practice, Julie made the transition into industry work where she could have a larger impact on patient care by directly educating healthcare providers about the power of optimizing healthcare through personalized medicine. She spent over a decade working for leading molecular diagnostic companies as a field-based genetic counselor supporting commercial teams before stepping into her current role as an Associate Director of Marketing. In addition, she is a consultant offering leadership and professional development training and an avid volunteer within the genetic counseling profession. I wonder if everybody shouldn’t just have genetic testing. There are kids who grow up in the Foster system who wouldn’t have a way to know their family history and other families like my own who have relatives overseas so there is no raucous Thanksgiving party that she is talking about .
They would love everyone to submit their DNA. They’ve created databases for it. Look up hospitals in New Jersey keeping the samples from newborns without the parents consent. And filing it away for 23 years. They were also selling those samples to 3rd parties… I believe Texas and Minnesota did as well until they were sued over it.
The title of this video is misleading. I expected to hear about the genetics or lifestyle of our ancestors who lived thousands of years ago, not about the cancer history of my immediate family.

I thought most people knew that cancer is caused by toxins in the environment, including all the popular household cleaners & fabric sofners ? And chemical additives in food. And yes then it can be passed down same way when they test toxins on rats the offspring will also get cancer. Stop trying to manipulate people into believing they are going to get sick. Our thoughts dictate our reality and the mind is a very powerful healer ❤
