Using bar stock instead of square …. maybe use two rods, possibly conjoined (is that a word? ). Would reduce the force applied to the sheets by a thin point of contact. Nope, that just complicates things. KISS.
I think the square bar helps with keeping the clamp level when clamping down so that if you’re only clamping a small space it doesn’t just make the material “snap” after so much clamping force
